Oh man - I came here to say this, and actually just posted it before seeing that you beat me to it. Such a great quote! This one, too, from Billy Joel — “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints… the sinners are much more fun!”

I couldn’t read all of it because it was spiking my anxiety. You grew up in Germany; I grew up all over the world—my father wasn’t in the military. He was a sociologist and functional alcoholic. We moved every 2 to 3 years and both my parents were narcissists. An international move every 2 to 3 years with no support other than random teachers. My sisters are also both assholes; we don’t speak. So I have quite a bit of trauma in my past. What I never thought about is why I have such a great sense of humor.
This may be in your top three best essays, Oliver. I’ve followed Umair Haque for years, and learned a great deal from him regarding the wet bulb effects on humans. You provided us with information we need to know because the MSM will twist it into pretzel-shaped nonsense, ultimately killing many of us with no accountability for their crimes.
Immense hardship is soon to be unleashed upon our citizenry. Extreme poverty and rape of women and children will explode. Wages will be halved. Medical insurance will belong only to those with connections to governmental corruption or to those whose wealth provides them access.
Our children will be indoctrinated to have the fervor of little brownshirts, and will eventually become the future trump army, sent to eliminate the human element who cannot alter the skin pigmentation.
And then there’s the heat, which will increase pandemics as it ends the lives of those with the “correct” skin color as well as the “subhumans.”
I believe you’re right about finding moments of joy and laughter wherever and whenever we can. Pleasure will become a luxury in trumpistan.
Brilliant piece. I hope we see a series of sitcoms like the 1960's dark medical films and series that bring the exquisite absurdity of the "healing profession" to light. Maybe one on the new IRS(Interesting Revenue Sources), DoD(Devastation on Demand), State Dept(Department of Statements, Social Sec. Dept(Suck it up Sally), Homeland Security(Hang 'em all Homey), etc., etc.
Humor is all I've got, If not for the irony of it All I suppose I'd become an Alcoholic because the last time I looked it was still legal ! Thank You, Oliver for your post this morning ☕ and will reStack ASAP
my family has a pretty dark humor, we always called it our Mexican black humor. my Dad was a fireman, my creepy first stepfather was a fireman that drove ambulance, and my son is a Veteran and has the darkest, funniest humor of anyone i know. so yeah, we laugh because it's better than crying.
Same here. When we were about to head out on a boat to scatter my father’s ashes, my sister introduced us all to the captain then held up the box and said this is my dad. We all burst out laughing. I’m sure the captain thought we were insane but we knew dad would have appreciated it.
Appreciate reading this AND the comments. Times like these make me grateful that I didn't retire and get to go to work tomorrow. Serving a small city in Texas makes life better--especially since this year has been extraordinarily busy. After 30+ years in public service, I'm very good at not talking about politics in the workplace (even though a coworker tried on Friday) but I'll listen to anyone :D 😍🖖
Changes to shipping fuels are leading to a faster increase in global temperature (because the horribly toxic fuels which were destroying the environment in other ways were actually suppressing warming at a meaningful rate). It’s likely that the Trump administration will suffer the worst warming and the worst weather events our planet has ever seen. Perhaps the population that constantly associates the current economy with the current administration regardless of history will do the same with the climate.

Haha - such a funny movie all around, but Lloyd Bridges, Lesley Nielson, and others were so surprisingly funny! A break from their serious roles.

This is a quality that many very traumatised individuals share . I can relate to the constant moving all over the place !
Today is a good day to start smoking again.

Excellent piece. Plus, you validated my decision to spend my entire savings to buy a yacht. Thank you very much, I'm on it!

We have free rein to indulge in whatever … 🤣😂
Yeah, finding the dark humor in our lives today is doing shadow work. Gotta do it or our heads will explode. 🤷♀️
Bout says it all.

i think he absolutely would have!
No woman
No cry
Reminds me of Bob Woodward asking Shrub how history will judge him for the Iraq war. A: History won’t know, we’ll all be dead.
